Howdy!
I’ve just returned from a health coach training session in Dallas, TX. It was very inspiring for me to be around ya’ll! Our program is not just changing lives for the better but literally saving lives. We are creating health in America.
Slips Happen
In all my years of coaching there have been less than a handful of clients who followed protocol without deviation beginning to end. But really, how many people actually have this super-capability? It’s a personality thing limited to a very small percentage of the population. So for the rest of us, slips happen.
I’m not fond of the term “slip” because it implies you unknowingly made a simple mistake; like tripping on the carpet and falling mouth first into a pizza then sliding in pain to the floor as beer spills down your throat. The reality is most slips have some type of inkling, premeditation or justification preceding it. So what I’m here to say is get over it. It’s not about the slips. And feeling bad or guilty when it happens will most likely just lead you back to oscillating patterns (yo-yo).
Create Health
Understanding the difference between losing weight and creating health is the most powerful concept you can adopt right now. In the mindset of creating health slips are viewed as valuable feedback. Regret, feeling bad about a slip, etc. is conflict manipulation. You can avoid it by thinking differently. And you’ve got two very powerful tools in your possession to help you do so:
· Your solid vision of what you look like and feel like at your ideal weight. Is this image vivid in your mind? If not then make it real by giving it personal details. Then look at it often. When I was on the 5&1, every night as I lay in bed drifting off to sleep I would see my skinny self. Often I awoke to this image without even trying. This is your creation! Holding a vision of it with you at all times is incredibly empowering.
· Your “WHY” is BIG. The why compliments your vision; it is the text to your vision. Write down your biggest reasons for wanting to be at your healthy weight. Keep it handy and look at it often.
If you do choose through premeditation, circumstance or justification to go off plan then merely look at it for what it is. You went off plan. What I know from my personal experience plus experience in working with those most successful is that this type of thinking can actually set you free of yourself. Then you can choose your slips strategically knowing these facts:
- *Slips will slow down your weight loss temporarily
- *You will spend more time and more money on the 5&1 phase when you slip
- *Slips most often lead to increased hunger and cravings
- *Compliancy is empowering and encouraging, slips are the opposite
- *Too many slips will prevent you from fully entering the magical state of “fat burning” where weight loss is rapid and you’ve got energy and feel good.
- *BIGGEST RISK OF ALL: one slip could potentially knock you completely off plan. Sadly, I’ve seen it too many times. The vision gets tucked away and eventually the weight returns.
There is great power in knowing the choice is yours. There were times in my journey that I consciously made the decision to go off plan for one reason or another. I don’t regret those times because I was able to return immediately to the 5&1. I could have lost faster, sure, but overall I’m happy with my results. I want you to be also!
5&1 Myths
This isn’t a comprehensive list, just a couple of the biggies:
- “Medifast is a diet” Not True. The Take Shape For Life program uses Medifast as a powerful tool in helping create health. Don’t think of it as a diet but rather your “secret weapon” to looking and feeling great.
- “I’ll have to eat like this for the rest of my life” Not True. The 5&1 is a very specific set of protocols designed for short term use only. Stick to it and attain your ideal weight as quickly as possible then practice the beslim lifestyle to keep it that way.
- “After I go off this program I’ll just gain it all back anyway” Not True. That is a diet mentality. If you choose to gain it back, that’s one thing, but as my client you’ll have the resources available to design your very own personal roadmap of permanent weight control and optimal health.
- “Carbs are bad, Fats are bad” Not True. Our bodies need carbohydrates, fats, proteins and fiber in proportion. Definitely some fats and some carbs are better than others. Our program teaches the very basics of nutrition so you’ll know how to eat healthy for the rest of your life.
- “I’ll never be able to eat my favorite foods again” NOT TRUE! C’mon, what kind of program is that?? Sure you may not be able to eat like you did before but eating favorite foods in moderation is what life is all about! (As far as I’m concerned). Get to your ideal weight and you’ll see what I mean. Cravings subside to the manageable level and smaller portions feel very natural.
Oscillating Patterns
In his book The Path of Least Resistance, Robert Fritz teaches the concept of oscillating patterns. Robert is an artist, composer, best selling author and expert in the field of structural dynamics. Many of our advanced health coach trainings have included Mr. Fritz as an honored guest and speaker. In part, he teaches that we all exhibit patterns of oscillating behavior in our lives but are mostly unaware of them or how to break free of these limiting behaviors. Yo-yo dieting is an oscillating pattern. In order to break free one must first make the distinction between a diet mentality and creating health. Hopefully I’ve said enough today to get you started in that direction. I truly want you to find yourself enjoying life at a healthy weight permanently. As your coach, that is my aim.
Yours in health,
eb.
